His detailed watercolour drawing of a rabbit (1502) is even by a modern perspective a feast for the eyes to every animal lover. Lots of his ideas and techniques in painting, perspective, woodcuts, engravings and graphics have become the respective art’s standard that is still valid today. Albrecht Dürer is undoubtedly the most famous Nuremberg artist of all time. In times dominated by ecclesiastical themes, Dürer discovered the wonders of nature and painted native and exotic animals in an unseen lifelike manner - sometimes without ever having seen the animals and plants himself, as in the case of the famous Rhinocerus woodcut (1515).
Located near the Imperial Castle in the northern city centre, Dürer’s House, which was named the world's first artists' memorial in 1828, is now home to one of the city's most popular museums. Thanks to a six-language audio guide, international visitors can also immerse into the world of Albrecht Dürer and experience the artistic techniques of 500 years ago in the painting and printing workshop. In addition to a permanent exhibition of Dürer's works, changing special exhibitions offer a glimpse into the history of the artist's reception.
From the Nuremberg exhibition grounds it is just seven stops with underground line U1 and a short walk through the centre of the medieval old town to Albrecht Dürer’s House. Within walking distance are the medieval Imperial Castle, the Toy Museum and the Nuremberg City Museum as well as numerous shops, restaurants, hotels and guesthouses.
