The ZZF Ringstelle is an official agency for identification markings for protected species recognised by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment. The association has tasked its subsidiary, WZF GmbH, with selling and registering these markings. The registration and marking requirements are intended to prevent illegal trade in protected animals. Two staff members process orders, dispatch bird rings and transponders to breeders, animal parks or zoos, and maintain the database.
