Interzoo 2012: The world’s biggest show of pet products
The international pet industry meets again in Nürnberg from 17–20 May 2012, when over 1,500 manufacturers, wholesalers and service providers from an expected 53 countries present their new products such as pet food, accessories, grooming articles and enclosures at Interzoo, the world’s biggest exhibition for pet supplies. The world-leading exhibition offers the professional audience a comprehensive overview of the global market on a gross display area of more than 90,000 square metres in eleven halls.

Hans-Jochen Büngener, Chairman of the Interzoo Exhibition Committee, is convinced that the coming Interzoo will bring new impulses for pet keeping: “Pet owners look for products that enhance living together with pets and enable their pets to lead an appropriate life. The industry therefore invests a lot of money in developing new pet-friendly ideas and ensuring reliable product quality. The manufacturers often wait until Interzoo so that they can present their innovations and new products to a large professional audience at the world’s leading exhibition.”

The current level of registrations shows that 79 per cent of the exhibitors at Interzoo 2012 come from abroad. The largest display areas are occupied by Germany, China, Italy, Great Britain, the Netherlands, the USA, France, Belgium, Spain and Poland. Particularly Europe and America provide this year’s growth. Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, the USA and Hong Kong are the main countries with larger display areas at Interzoo in 2012. New this year are Estonia, Latvia, Malta, Romania and Tunisia.

The global range of products for animals

46 per cent of this year’s exhibitors are expected to present articles for dogs and cats. The second largest product segments are aquaria and articles for small animals and rodents with about 20 per cent. 14 per cent of the exhibitors present articles for birds, 12 per cent show articles for animals in the garden and supplementary articles for the pet supplies trade, such as equestrian sports or boutique articles, and around 11 per cent show terraria products.

Other product groups are shop fittings, packing, pet food technology, trade literature, multimedia and various services. The data provided by the exhibitors possibly included multiple answers.

Global pet market is stable

The international pet industry turns over about 67 billion euros a year according to information from the market research institute Euromonitor International. Norbert Holthenrich, President of the German Pet Trade & Industry Association (ZZF), the exhibition’s honorary sponsor, describes the market as stable: “People all over the world still derive great pleasure from living together with pets. The pet market therefore offers growth prospects for both global players and small and medium enterprises, and many of them use Interzoo as a platform for expanding their business internationally and launching new products.”

International attendance

Over 38,000 trade visitors from 115 countries sourced information about the industry’s new products at Interzoo 2010. Most of the visitors from Europe came from Germany, Italy, France, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic and Great Britain. Many overseas visitors travelled from Asia and the USA. Overall, the international share of Interzoo visitors was 62 per cent. Interzoo is a trade fair and admission is restricted to pet supplies buyers and other specialists from the pet industry. Pet owners, breeders and other private persons are not admitted to the exhibition.

Plan a visit online or by smartphone

The Interzoo website provides useful tips for visitors, exhibitors and journalists to plan for the exhibition and an exhibitors database in which they can search for company names, keywords and product groups. As a recent addition, Interzoo also offers visitor-orientated information such as tips on travel and accommodation, an exhibitor search function and a hall floor plan for all mobile devices at m.interzoo.com. It is not necessary to download a program. If smartphone users accidentally enter the general Internet address for Interzoo or are routed there over a link, a browser sniffer detects that the user is a mobile device and routes him to the new mobile website automatically.

Animal welfare at Interzoo

Interzoo is a trade fair for pet supplies and not an animal market. If an exhibitor wishes to present pets, he must register the presentation before the exhibition and ensure that he keeps the animals in accordance with the directives and provisions applicable in Germany. Examples of presentations not allowed are ornamental fish in column and wall-picture aquariums or reptiles in micro-terrariums.

The promoter of Interzoo is Wirtschaftsgemeinschaft Zoologischer Fachbetriebe GmbH (WZF), which has appointed NürnbergMesse GmbH to organize the exhibition. The German Pet Trade & Industry Association (ZZF) is the honorary sponsor of the exhibition.
